In most cases, when you try to view the desktops of a Windows 2000 client on a domain controller that has Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 installed, you receive the following error message in Server Manager:
The remote computer is not available. win use * Share

This problem can occur, for example, when using the net view directives or the net use command.
These issues may occur if File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is disabled or not installed.
To resolve the issue, make sure the file and the shared printer are compatible with the Microsoft network. To do this, follow these steps:
- Log in to your computer and verify your administrator credentials.
- Double-click My Computer, double-click Control Panel, then double-click Dial-Up Networking.
- Double-click the network connection you want to edit, then click Properties.
- On the General tab, under Checked Components, look for File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. If it’s not listed, install it by clicking the “Install” button and then double-clicking “Tools”.
- Make sure “File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks” is checked. This parameterp makes the shares available on the network.
File and Printer Even the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server service is available for sharing on Microsoft networks. If you don’t want to share resources over a full connection, disable this setting in the full connection properties. Windows 2002 Active Directory requires that optional File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks be enabled in the domain for controllers that perform required tasks, such as distributing the SYSVOL share using the File Replication Service.
